Lock your 2027 US and Canada holiday calendar before Q1 coverage planning starts.

October is when smart ops and HR teams stop arguing about Thanksgiving and start locking the 2027 company holiday calendar. If you wait until the first Friday in January, managers are already approving leave around New Year’s with a half-finished spreadsheet — and someone in Ontario or Texas is working a “holiday” that was never in their handbook.

This guide gives you the 2027 US federal observed dates, the Canadian federal statutory baseline, and a clean way to load them into PTO software so calendars, leave math, and payroll expectations stay aligned. It is not legal advice; it is an operating checklist for SMBs that hire across borders.

Why 2027 holiday calendars break spreadsheet workflows

A shared Google Sheet titled “Holidays 2027 FINAL v4” fails for predictable reasons:

  • Weekend observances move. In 2027, several US federal holidays fall on Saturday or Sunday and shift for Monday–Friday schedules. Canada’s Christmas and Boxing Day land on a weekend too.
  • Country is not enough. Canadian provincial employment standards diverge. A Toronto warehouse and a Calgary office are not on identical lists.
  • Employees plan leave against the wrong source of truth. If the calendar in HR’s drive disagrees with the one on the wall, coverage requests pile up in Slack instead of your leave queue.
  • Hidden company days. Floating holidays, founder’s day, or “office closed between Christmas and New Year’s” rarely survive a copy-paste from a government PDF.

You need one holiday library the product can sync, filter, and show on employee calendars — not another tab named “use this one.” When the library is wrong, leave approvals slow down, timesheets get exception notes, and finance asks why holiday pay does not match the schedule someone posted in chat.

US federal holidays 2027 (observed dates)

The Office of Personnel Management publishes the schedule federal employees follow. Private employers are not automatically bound to it, but many SMBs use it as the default closed-day list, then customize.

Observed dates for most Monday–Friday federal schedules in 2027:

  • Friday, January 1 — New Year’s Day
  • Monday, January 18 — Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Monday, February 15 — Washington’s Birthday (often called Presidents’ Day in private workplaces)
  • Monday, May 31 — Memorial Day
  • Friday, June 18 — Juneteenth National Independence Day (legal date Saturday June 19; observed Friday for most federal Monday–Friday schedules)
  • Monday, July 5 — Independence Day (legal date Sunday July 4; observed Monday)
  • Monday, September 6 — Labor Day
  • Monday, October 11 — Columbus Day
  • Thursday, November 11 — Veterans Day
  • Thursday, November 25 — Thanksgiving Day
  • Friday, December 24 — Christmas Day (legal date Saturday December 25; observed Friday for most federal Monday–Friday schedules)

State and city holidays can still apply depending on where people work. Put the days your company will actually close (or pay as holidays) into the system, not every optional observance on the internet. If you stay open on Columbus Day but close the Friday after Thanksgiving, say so in the handbook and mirror it in Holiday Management — do not leave managers guessing from last year’s email thread.

Canada statutory holidays 2027 (federal baseline)

Federally regulated private-sector employers follow the Canada Labour Code general-holiday list. Provincial employers follow their province’s employment standards — which is why a single “Canada holidays” column is never enough.

Federal general holidays in 2027 (nominal dates):

  • Friday, January 1 — New Year’s Day
  • Friday, March 26 — Good Friday
  • Monday, May 24 — Victoria Day
  • Thursday, July 1 — Canada Day
  • Monday, September 6 — Labour Day
  • Thursday, September 30 — National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
  • Monday, October 11 — Thanksgiving Day
  • Thursday, November 11 — Remembrance Day
  • Saturday, December 25 — Christmas Day
  • Sunday, December 26 — Boxing Day

Because Christmas and Boxing Day fall on a weekend in 2027, substitute paid days may shift to adjacent working days under the Canada Labour Code or provincial rules and your written policy. Confirm the observed day your company will use before you publish the calendar to staff.

Provincial extras (Family Day / Islander Day variants, Civic Holiday in August, Easter Monday in some workplaces, and whether Remembrance Day is a paid day off) belong in your policy matrix — not as a surprise on the employee calendar. If you operate in more than one province, maintain a short matrix by province and map each employee’s work location before you sync.

For primary sources, start with the Canada Labour Code and your province’s employment standards pages. This article is not legal advice.

What a good company holiday calendar looks like

  • One library per product region set — US and Canada rows you can filter, not three competing spreadsheets.
  • Observed dates, not only legal dates — especially for 2027 weekend holidays.
  • Country (and employee location) awareness — staff see days that apply to them.
  • Company add / public hide — floating holidays and “we stay open on Columbus Day” without rewriting the whole year.
  • Feeds calendars and leave math — weekday vs weekend observances matter for allowance logic.
  • Preloaded before Q1 — managers plan coverage while leave requests are still calm.

If your current process is “HR emails a PDF in December,” you do not have a calendar system — you have an announcement. Announcements do not block double-booking on the team timeline or keep holiday names consistent in leave reports.

Employee vs admin: who sees which holidays

In TimeOff Manager, holiday work splits cleanly:

  • Admins / HR open Holiday Management (/admin/holidays) from Settings → Holidays. Browse by year, filter by country, sync from the holidays feed, preload the next calendar year, add a company holiday, or hide a public holiday.
  • Employees open My holidays (/holidays) under Me → Holidays (or the phone app). They see days that apply to their country / optional state or province profile — useful before requesting leave around a long weekend.
  • Line managers typically stay off the admin catalog and use the same staff list plus team calendars for coverage.

Pair the holiday library with your leave workflows: employees submit from My leave requests, managers work the queue in Manage leave requests, and coverage shows on the team timeline calendar. For policy categories beyond vacation and sick, use custom leave types when that feature is enabled. Employee month views on the employee month calendar also help people spot holiday clusters before they submit.

Practical steps: load 2027 before the year starts

  1. Decide the policy. Which US federal days do you close or pay? Which Canadian federal / provincial days apply by work location? Document weekend in-lieu rules in writing.
  2. Open Holiday Management for 2027. Use year navigation (previous / current / next). If the year is empty, run Sync for that year so the public holiday feed populates.
  3. Preload next year early. The UI can preload the following calendar year; the product also notes an automatic preload around December 15. Do not wait for that if managers are already planning January schedules.
  4. Filter by country. Walk US and Canada lists separately. Hide days you will not observe. Add company-only closures.
  5. Check employee profiles. My holidays follows the employee’s country (and optional state/province), not only HQ. Fix location data before people request Christmas week off.
  6. Connect leave and calendars. Confirm leave types and approval paths still match the handbook, then preview coverage on the team calendar around each long weekend.
  7. Tell the company once. Publish the final 2027 list (and any floating days) so Slack is not the holiday system of record.

Company-wide settings that affect time off live under company settings. For a broader leave-and-clocks walkthrough, see the PTO, clocks & overtime guide. New hires should receive the same holiday list during onboarding so their first long weekend is not a guessing game.

Long weekends managers should flag early in 2027

You do not need a 50-row risk register. Flag the clusters that drive coverage fights:

  • US New Year’s — Friday January 1 sits next to a weekend; leave requests often spill into Thursday December 31, 2026.
  • US Memorial Day / Labour Day style Mondays — classic three-day weekends for field and retail coverage.
  • US Independence Day week — observed Monday July 5 after a Sunday July 4.
  • Canada Thanksgiving Monday (October 11) — same calendar day as US Columbus Day in 2027; multi-country teams should label carefully so people know which holiday applies where.
  • Late December — US observed Christmas on Friday December 24 vs Canada’s weekend Christmas/Boxing pair with possible substitute weekdays.

Put those weeks on the team timeline early. If two team leads already promised time off, resolve it in the leave queue — not in a group chat the night before.

Compliance notes (read this before you copy-paste)

This is not legal advice. Holiday pay, substitute days, and whether a day is a statutory holiday depend on jurisdiction, industry regulation, collective agreements, and your contracts.

  • US private employers generally choose paid holidays; federal lists are a common baseline, not a private-sector mandate.
  • Canadian employers must separate federally regulated workplaces from provincial employment standards.
  • Weekend in-lieu rules in 2027 are easy to get wrong — lock observed dates in policy, then mirror them in software.
  • Multi-state / multi-province teams should map holidays to work location, not to the founder’s hometown calendar.

FAQ

When should we preload the 2027 holiday calendar?

Do it in Q4 while managers still have bandwidth. In TimeOff Manager, Holiday Management can preload the next calendar year ahead of the automatic December 15 job, so coverage planning and leave requests around New Year’s are not waiting on a January scramble.

Do US private employers have to follow the federal holiday list?

Federal holidays bind federal employees. Private employers set their own paid holiday policy. Many SMBs mirror the OPM list for simplicity, then add company-specific days. Confirm what your handbook and employment contracts actually promise.

Why do Canadian statutory holidays differ by province?

Federally regulated workplaces follow the Canada Labour Code general-holiday list. Most provincial employers follow their province’s employment standards, which add or drop days (for example Civic Holiday or Family Day variants). Filter by country — and track employee work location — so staff see the days that apply to them.

What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend in 2027?

US federal in-lieu rules move several 2027 observances (Juneteenth to Friday June 18, Independence Day to Monday July 5, Christmas to Friday December 24 for most Monday–Friday federal schedules). In Canada, Christmas and Boxing Day fall on Saturday and Sunday in 2027, so substitute working days depend on the Canada Labour Code or provincial rules and your policy. Put the observed day your company will actually close into the calendar.

Can we hide a public holiday or add a company-only day?

Yes. Admins can hide a public holiday so it no longer applies for calendars and leave math, and can add a company holiday. Employees still see the days that apply to their profile on My holidays.

How is this different from PTO balances and leave requests?

Public holidays are the shared closed days. PTO and leave requests are individual balances and approvals. TimeOff Manager keeps both: Holiday Management for the annual library, leave types and requests for vacation/sick, and team calendars for coverage.
